Toxic additives in baby products

by Kristina Blasen (2011)

This one makes me mad and I bet it would make a lot of moms out there mad too. I was giving baby a bath and I was using a well-known brand name of baby wash…as in the kind they give out as free samples and even in the hospital.

Probably like you, I thought that of all the cosmetics and personal bath products and lotions that I’ve checked out in my house so far, the ingredients on this one would be SAFE.

No, it was full of toxic crap.

Except for water,  most of these ingredients have either an unknown (untested) effect on humans and some are a KNOWN carcinogen or mutagen others are suspected in causing developmental delays.

Johnson’s head-to-toe baby wash ingredients:

Water, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium
Trideceth Sulfate, Glycerin, Lauroamphoglycinate, PEG-150 Distearate,
Sodium Laureth-13 Carboxylate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10,
Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, D&C Yellow #10, D&C
Orange #4.

Notice that the formaldehyde isn’t listed…the company says that it is a byproduct from the manufacturing process so they don’t have to list it!

Once I started looking I found out that there have been articles published on this (where was I?)

Here is one from USA Today: (2009)

This one breaks down how much Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane were found in the products tested: (2009)

There is also a class action lawsuit, you can learn about it here: and here (2010)

Mad yet? Do a Google search and you will find more articles on this.

  1. Wow, this is scary. Products that mother’s have trusted for years. Thank you, Kristina for bringing this to the attention of mother’s and others that love children.

    • This one makes me mad because if you read the linked articles the companies response wasn’t that they were going to make sure to remove the chemicals from the baby shampoo, it was just that they didn’t have to legally label them since they weren’t “added” they were only a “by-product” of their manufacturing. Who lets them get away with that?

  2. If you can’t recognize and the word looks like a scientific name. You might as well figure it is poison. Just like aspartame it is poisoning many and causing a lot of problems. Aspartame is like formaldehyde. Embalming fluid. Wow and people are ingesting that too. I just told someone today at Walmart. Why do we feel like we are intruding in someone’s life when we tell them something that may prevent them from getting sick. Well good writing Kristina.

    • Well, sometimes I look them up and it turns out that it is just the scientific name for a vitamin, but most of the time you are right, those are chemicals in there. Then I look up the chemicals and sometimes we haven’t tested them on humans so we don’t really know (long term) if they are harmful…bad enough that we allow those in food, but it makes me mad when we have a lot of real science that shows an additive is a carcinogen or mutagen and other countries have already banned it from their food supply, but here in the US we’re still allowing it.

  3. I do not understand how people can constantly be so obtuse.
There is no kindness in people any more. People are increasingly acrimonius and we cannot solve problems of any type until
we can get along. We can disagree, certainly, but we still have to make choices and get the
    freakin’ job done.

  4. Well done Kristina. I’ve been searching for 100% organic shampoo&conditioner. So far by research I came across Goat’s Milk shampoo which I now doubt it’s completely organic and natural. I’m still looking up those names listed under the ingredients. Wen products says it’s 100% chemical free. I have not tried Wen yet. Expensive products. We have to do our job to share with other people who cares. Keep on sharing ladies. It works telling the truth.

  5. Hi, I do think this is a great blog. I stumbledupon it 😉 I’m going to return yet again since I book-marked it. Money and freedom is the best way to change, may you be rich and continue to help others.
