Toxic additives in baby products
by Kristina Blasen (2011)
This one makes me mad and I bet it would make a lot of moms out there mad too. I was giving baby a bath and I was using a well-known brand name of baby wash…as in the kind they give out as free samples and even in the hospital.
Probably like you, I thought that of all the cosmetics and personal bath products and lotions that I’ve checked out in my house so far, the ingredients on this one would be SAFE.
No, it was full of toxic crap.
Except for water, most of these ingredients have either an unknown (untested) effect on humans and some are a KNOWN carcinogen or mutagen others are suspected in causing developmental delays.
Johnson’s head-to-toe baby wash ingredients:
Water, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium
Trideceth Sulfate, Glycerin, Lauroamphoglycinate, PEG-150 Distearate,
Sodium Laureth-13 Carboxylate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10,
Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, D&C Yellow #10, D&C
Once I started looking I found out that there have been articles published on this (where was I?)
Here is one from USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-03-12-formaldehyde_N.htm (2009)
This one breaks down how much Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane were found in the products tested: http://consumerist.com/2009/03/baby-products-now-with-formaldehyde.html (2009)
There is also a class action lawsuit, you can learn about it here: http://classlitigation.com/index.php/about-us/65-suit-alleges-baby-products-contain-carcinogens and here http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/617-johnson-a-johnson-and-walmart-sued-for-selling-toxic-baby-shampoo (2010)
Mad yet? Do a Google search and you will find more articles on this.
