Organic mud shampoo is a no-go!

A quest for organic shampoo and conditioner that works!

by Kristina Blasen (2011)

I tried the Terressentials organic mud-based shampoo (Left Coast Lemon Pure Earth Hair Wash) for about a month and overall it is a no-go so I’m back to searching for something better…and cheaper…preferably local…

I loved knowing that I wasn’t putting chemicals in my hair that are known to cause cancer, the Lemon scent was great and it made my hair super soft, but you have to order it in the mail and it is super expensive and you need a lot when you first start using it for your hair to adjust (according to their website).

The big downside is that I have dark blonde hair and the mud shampoo significantly darkened the look of my hair and after repeated use the hair felt super soft, but also thick and gummy. I think this is because of the organic Castile based soap made from olive oil, since I tried a different Castile-soap and ran into the thick gummy feeling before. It isn’t all bad though, I love the Terressentials organic baby wash and their organic deodorant and I will order those again when I run out!

This time I’m trying out MasterCuts Moisture formula sulfate free shampoo and conditioner since they were on sale when I got my hair cut. These smell great, mildly fruity and for the first ten washes or so, all was well…until, there it was again, that gummy dirty hair buildup feeling [sigh]. It isn’t all bad though, one wash with a different shampoo every so often and these still work great!

  1. Hi! We’re glad to read that you have been dipping your toes into the waters of the authentic USDA certified organic personal care products world! We thought that we would take a brief minute to let you and your readers know that our web site has an excellent article — our Hair Wash instructions article (see link following) — that explains, in great detail, how our unique Hair Wash product works: how to speed the detox, conditioning the hair with our genuine organic Anointing Oils, selecting the proper formula for one’s hair type, info on styling the hair (what’s a compatible product and what’s not), the pitfalls of extreme chemical hair treatments (bleaching, dyeing, perming, straightening), etc.

Do note that numbers one and five in the Hair Wash article do discuss what you experienced, and number five offers our tip for helping to resolve sebum and/or polymer and/or wax buildup by completing our recommended periodic deep cleansing treatment (in addition to and complementary to regular washing with our Hair Wash) and a dilute vinegar rinse that helps those with natural hair have softer, full and more lustrous hair.

    Enjoy!

    • Wow, good to know the companies I write about are on top of their press, huh? 🙂 It isn’t all bad, I checked out the reviews on this mud-based organic shampoo before I bought it, I did read the article the Terressentials team suggests and tried the mud-bake detox they suggest. To be fair, I didn’t do the vinegar hair rinse they suggest (eww! stinky!) and I didn’t have any deep conditioner they might offer to go with it…still love their organic deodorant though!

  2. If you’re interested I work for a company that sells chemical free shampoo, all purpose cleaning product, oatmeal soap bars, laundry detergent, and dish detergent ( both powder and liquid available), these products are formulated for softened water tho. We also carry a shower filter that takes the chlorine out of your water. I’ve personal used all of our products and love them, with having sensitive skin and being allergic to pretty much every chemical known to man I had to try something chemical free and I haven’t changed products since.

  3. I tried there mud shampoo and I loved it! It makes my very kinky ethnic hair so soft and manageable, but it is very expensive
